PAUL DEWAR AND TREE OTTAWA GIVE PRIMARY SCHOOL YARD A GREEN BOOST ON EARTH DAY

OTTAWA – Paul Dewar, NDP MP for Ottawa Centre, joined Tree Ottawa and students from St Anthony Catholic School today to plant a tree in the school yard to mark Earth Day.

“Having more green space available for students to learn and play is a worthwhile goal,” said Dewar. “I am very pleased to partner with Tree Ottawa today, and I encourage everyone in the local community to join in and help make this school yard green!”

Today’s ceremony contributes to St Anthony’s goal of de-paving up to 10,000 square feet of the asphalt yard, and replacing it with trees and local flora.

“Sadly, the City of Ottawa anticipates losing millions of trees in just the next 3-5 years,” explained Karen Hawley from Ecology Ottawa. “Now, more than ever, everyone’s help is needed to ensure a strong, stable tree population to maintain the ecological balance of Ottawa’s urban spaces like the St Anthony school yard.”

“This will directly benefit the 140 students of St. Anthony School,” St. Anthony’s Principal Paul McGuire added. “But it will also make a significant difference to the community, creating a creative growing space in a lower income urban environment.”
